Boaters Manifesto Facebook Group Revival

Yes folks it’s now a safe place to express your views, Peter has appointed 7 administrators including yours truly here - to prevent any naughtiness from those who enjoy stirring up trouble. Thereby creating free speech in the true meaning of the phrase…

This is the new Welcome to those who join the group (RHS), written by Peter & posted today:

“Everyone is welcome to join this Boaters’Manifesto Facebook page linked to www.boatersmanifesto.weebly.com, which is a resource for people who wish to comment on the manifesto's contents, or issues concerning the Canal and River Trust.
We welcome lively debate, but to ensure that everyone - those who support the content of the manifesto and those ...who don’t - feel able to contribute to that debate, we ask that posts are on topic and do not contain:
Swearing or personal attacks on other members. Criticism of the manifesto and the policies expressed in it and opinions about the waterways and the organisations involved in them is welcome, unpleasant criticism of individuals is not, especially using foul language. Posts which contravene these guidelines can be removed immediately by administrators who will give an explanation to the individual involved, if requested, by Facebook message.
If two or more people complain about a post or related comments the post or comment concerned will be removed and the person who posted will be given a warning. If that person chooses to ignore this warning and offends again, they will be removed from the membership of the group without further notification.”

And these are the Admins:

Peter Heather Underwood

Jonathan David Ody

Peter J. MacDonald

Pete Gray

Heather Rowsell

Chris Birchall

Michael Clark

Notice how I’m the only female person in there? Ah well, from a woman’s perspective & all that…

And there’s more, now that the site’s been cleaned of bad rubbish, & will remain that way. I’d like to invite anyone who left in disgust to re-join, & anyone who’s never joined anyway to erm join up anyway…

Andy, you could also post your statement on there now without fear of getting your head bitten off, might be a good idea chuck…

Hi Sue,

You'll be pleased to know Andy's found his "mooring spot" amidst the group now with a very positive welcome :-)

No need for the taser gun then lol

Heth, Adagio doesn't do Facebook (yet!) so cannot join the group (at the mo). Do you know how many boaters' views Peter received when he drafted the manifesto?

I corresponded with Peter on Twitter about it but have stopped Tweeting since I got fed up with so many Tweeps posting ill-founded Tweets often based on flaky data/'facts'. I did not agree with some aspects of the manifesto but we live in a democracy so I was content to accept the majority view having been given the opportunity to express my opinion. It is good to see that CRT trustees have seen it and responded. A promising start. However, taking into account the endemic boater apathy out there and that many boaters seem only to want to moan about everything and do nothing to help themselves I wonder what real impact the manifesto will have on the CRT? That is why it is important to be able to prove the manifesto represents the views of a significant part of the boater constituency to fight of the gainsayers. (I believe there are some 35000 boats registered on BW waters which suggests there are significantly more boaters than that number!) Which takes me back to my original question, "What is the real level of support from boaters for the manifesto?"

A rather wordy comment I know but I am sure we will discuss face to face when we finally meet! :-)

Hi folks,

Well it's definately worth joining the group now if you set yourself up on Farcebook (pet name).

Peter seems to be doing ok with the manifesto but I think it's an uphill struggle. He's slowly working his way through all the points on the group page. Now we've routed out the scumbags on there (sorry). People really seem to be contributing some good ideas now, but the way I read it is that there's nothing much we can do (oh the irony as boaters), except concentrate on improving the manifesto. Beyond that it's getting into the realms of politics & it appears we have no power. But like I said people are now throwing about positive fresh ideas.

Did you know the changeover date has been delayed till June? I knew April Fool's Day wasn't a good idea lol.

And that IWA & NABO are "clubbing together" to vote their own people in.

The only positive outcome from the delay is that maybe we get some more time to find a voice.

However, it's been said that it's inevitable it will be delayed again because there is no organisation...

Another rather long & complex comment lol
